Which is of course also what Apple are referring to when they call the iPad "magical". Bit of a stretch, that. :-)

Played the demo. At its best the control scheme feels like puppeteering which is a grand step forward compared to average. There are however a lot of weaknesses... Some of the sequences of buttons to press and hold make no sense and are if not complicated somewhat annoying (far from a natural user interface). I have never built a complex 3D-game but it is beyond me how anyone can fail so horribly with the commands for walking. There is also some unwelcome traditional button pressing in action sequences. This and the fact that the demo crashed repeatedly makes me think I´ll hold off on Heavy Rain until it can be found in the bargain bin. The graphics are beautiful and the story seems good but my hopes where just to high. In other words not a new standard but hopefully an inspiration for other game developers.

Thanks for the feedback. I just saw another great example of animation guiding users through transitions. Check out how Chrome for mac animates new tabs on Command + T. It is fast, enhances the metaphor and makes all kinds of sense compared to adding new tabs in Safari. (which hogs cpu and freezes the window for a 3D-effect that adds absolutely nothing to the experience)

Great post, can't be said often enough. Though 0.5s is also quite slow.

Btw I just have to say how much I love how Apple uses animation in OS X contrary to windows and linux. Win and Lin uses animation as a form of eye-candy while OsX uses animation to hide actual loading times.
The effect is profound, but rarely used for some reason.
